Cadillac is set to make its official debut in Formula 1 in the 2026 season, marking an important milestone as it becomes the eleventh team on the starting grid for the world championship. Supported and backed financially by General Motors, one of the largest automobile manufacturers globally, and TWG Motorsports, Cadillac will initially run Ferrari power units, benefiting from the Italian team’s cutting-edge engine technology, with long-term plans aiming to develop its own bespoke power unit by the 2028 season. This ambitious project involves a substantial investment in innovation, technology, and overall competitiveness, with multiple operational bases and research facilities located strategically across the United States and Europe, all dedicated to the design, engineering, and development of the new Formula 1 car. Zak Brown, the CEO of McLaren Racing and a respected figure in Formula 1, has spoken with great enthusiasm and optimism about Cadillac’s entry into the pinnacle of motorsport.
Regarding staffing and human resources, Zak Brown expressed his belief that Cadillac will attract significantly more talented personnel and highly skilled professionals than it might lose to rival teams, which he considers a very positive and encouraging development for the entire Formula 1 ecosystem. Brown also added that in cases where some employees choose to leave Cadillac and join competing teams, as a team principal, he would continuously evaluate and reflect on what improvements or changes he can implement within his own team to retain talent and remain competitive. On the commercial side of the sport, especially regarding sponsorship and marketing partnerships, Brown is very confident that Cadillac will bring a fresh wave of new sponsors and partners into Formula 1, which will help to ease the current sponsorship market saturation and promote healthier commercial dynamics. This, in turn, is expected to lead to improved television broadcasting agreements, particularly within the United States, as well as significantly increased fan engagement and interest among the American audience. Zak Brown also highlighted that the investments coming from Cadillac and its associated sponsors will provide substantial benefits to the entire Formula 1 movement and ecosystem, and he is not particularly concerned about any short-term difficulties, such as the potential loss of some employees or a few sponsors during the transitional phase. He firmly believes that the overall contribution and positive impact that Cadillac’s entry will bring to Formula 1 will be far greater and will outweigh any initial challenges.
This strategic and ambitious move by Cadillac, supported by General Motors and TWG Motorsports, signals a new era for Formula 1 as the sport continues to grow its global footprint, especially in the United States, where interest and investment in motorsport are rapidly expanding. Zak Brown’s optimistic outlook reflects the potential for Cadillac to become a key player on the grid and help push the sport forward commercially, technologically, and competitively in the years leading up to and beyond 2026.
