In a long interview with BBC Sport, Zak Brown talks about McLaren’s “Renaissance.” After the first part of the season dominated by Red Bull and the newly crowned four-time world champion Max Verstappen, McLaren turned the tables, returning to victories that seemed long out of reach.
The 2024 Formula 1 season, which will likely see the constructors’ championship decided at the final round in Abu Dhabi after many years, is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in recent years, with seven different winners in a single season.
In this regard, Zak Brown stated: “We’re here to win; drivers’ championship, constructors’. This is the most exciting season I can remember. We haven’t won the constructors’ championship since 1998. If you look at the signs and reputation of our team, it’s hard to believe it’s been that long.”
“Having Ferrari and Charles Leclerc chasing us for the constructors’ championship, and Red Bull not that far behind, is really great for our sport. I think at the beginning of the year, everyone thought, ‘It’s going to be another season like 2023, it’s going to be boring.’ But we’ve had seven different race winners, and I can’t remember the last time that happened.”
In recent months, there’s been a lot of talk about the tense relationship between the FIA and the drivers, as well as the various investigations the federation has launched against several teams. Regarding the latest developments and the relationship with the FIA, the American CEO said: “I trust him. He’s not one to beat around the bush. He makes decisions. We were surprised by the timing of the decisions. The stewards have been a big topic this year.”
