The 2007 Formula 1 World Championship remains one of the most closely contested seasons in the sport’s history, and the Drivers’ standings still reflect how intense the battle between Ferrari and McLaren was right until the final race.
Kimi Räikkönen ultimately claimed the title — still Ferrari’s most recent world champion — finishing just one point ahead of Fernando Alonso and Lewis Hamilton, who ended the season level on points.
That year was also Lewis Hamilton’s rookie season in Formula 1, and the British driver immediately responded in 2008 with a dramatic championship victory decided in the final laps at Interlagos.
Comparisons with modern rookies in top teams
Hamilton’s talent was evident from the very beginning, something that immediately caught the attention of Nelson Piquet Jr, son of three-time world champion Nelson Piquet.
Speaking on the “Pelas Pistas” podcast, Piquet compared the rookie seasons of today’s drivers such as Oscar Piastri and Andrea Kimi Antonelli with Hamilton’s debut year, arguing that the modern rookies did not show the same level of confidence and determination as the British driver when facing a teammate of Fernando Alonso’s calibre.
At the time, Alonso was the reigning world champion, and Hamilton still managed to win four races in his debut season, alongside an impressive streak of nine consecutive podium finishes from his very first Grand Prix.
The title fight eventually came down to the already legendary season finale at Interlagos, where Hamilton was ultimately denied the championship after suffering a gearbox issue in the early stages of the race.
“Hamilton’s first season was much more significant than the championships he won later with his hands tied, even though he had a great car,” Piquet Jr said.
“And that is what really matters, because today we see what Oscar Piastri did in his first season against Lando, who was nothing special — he suffered a pretty heavy defeat. We see what Kimi Antonelli did against Russell in his first season. Then we take what Lewis did in his first season against Alonso. I think only we, people working in the sport, can really analyse it, right?”

Nelson Piquet Jr.’s analysis highlights the unique pressure cookers that top-tier rookie debuts represent. While Oscar Piastri and Kimi Antonelli have certainly proven their worth by securing seats in front-running machinery, Piquet suggests that the benchmark set by Lewis Hamilton in 2007 remains untouchable. Fighting a prime Fernando Alonso as a newcomer and taking the title race to the final lap is a feat of mental and technical strength that modern rookies are still striving to replicate. As the 2026 season continues to showcase the evolution of young talent, the 2007 season remains the gold standard for what is possible when a generational talent meets a championship-winning car for the first time.
