Williams has confirmed a driver change for the opening practice session of the Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona. Alex Albon will watch the first free practice session from the sidelines, with 24-year-old British driver Luke Browning taking over driving duties for FP1.
It will mark Browning’s fifth official Formula 1 practice appearance, with all of his previous FP1 outings also coming behind the wheel of a Williams car. The young Briton will not only drive the FW48 in Barcelona but will also return to the cockpit two weeks later at the Austrian Grand Prix. On that occasion, it will be Carlos Sainz who hands over his car for the session.
“I can’t wait to get behind the wheel of the FW48 for the first time,” said Browning. “Having two opportunities to experience the car during the European part of the season makes it even more special. I’ve worked hard to prepare myself so I can make the most of these sessions and help the team plan and prepare for the race weekends ahead.
“I’m incredibly grateful to everyone at Atlassian Williams Racing for their continued trust and support, and I’m looking forward to getting out on track.”
Williams Sporting Director Sven Smeets also praised the academy driver’s development and contribution to the team.
“Luke continues to prove that he is a valuable asset to the team, both through his simulator work and his performances on track,” said Smeets. “Giving him his first opportunity to drive the FW48 during two Grand Prix weekends is an important step in his development and a natural progression.
“We have a talented group of young drivers in the Williams Racing Driver Academy, and we are pleased to continue providing opportunities like this to support their growth and development.”
The FP1 sessions in Spain and Austria will offer Browning valuable mileage in the current-generation Formula 1 car while also allowing Williams to fulfil part of its mandatory rookie driver programme. For the British youngster, it represents another important milestone as he continues to build experience within the Grove-based team and strengthen his case for future opportunities at the highest level of motorsport.
