Leonardo Fornaroli will experience one of the most important milestones in any racing driver’s career at Barcelona: his official debut during a Formula 1 race weekend. The young Italian, who is part of McLaren’s driver development programme, will take part in the opening free practice session of the Spanish Grand Prix, driving the MCL40 in place of Lando Norris and using the number 67 for the occasion.
For the 21-year-old, this represents another significant step in the journey he has been building with the Woking-based team. McLaren welcomed him into its programme at the end of 2025 after two outstanding seasons in the junior categories, during which he secured back-to-back championships in Formula 3 in 2024 and Formula 2 in 2025, a feat achieved by only a select group of drivers.
His rapid rise through the ranks convinced McLaren to invest in his potential. Today, Leonardo Fornaroli serves as one of the team’s simulator drivers, supporting engineers both at the factory and throughout Grand Prix weekends by contributing to setup work, development programmes and performance analysis.
However, his FP1 debut does not come without preparation. Over recent months, Leonardo Fornaroli has completed several Testing of Previous Cars (TPC) sessions behind the wheel of McLaren’s 2023 Formula 1 car, gaining valuable mileage at circuits including Silverstone, Austin and Barcelona.
Those outings have provided an important foundation for understanding the demands of Formula 1 machinery. Nevertheless, the MCL40 represents a very different technical challenge. Compared to previous generations, the current cars have evolved significantly, not only due to changes in aerodynamic load levels but also because of the different way energy deployment and recovery systems are managed.
For a driver whose role is heavily focused on simulator work, obtaining direct experience with the current car is particularly valuable. Real-world running allows him to improve the correlation between what he feels on track, the data collected by the team and the virtual models used in simulation. This, in turn, makes the development work he carries out behind the scenes throughout the season even more effective.
That is one of the main reasons why this FP1 appearance is considered so important for both the driver and the team. Beyond gaining experience, it gives Leonardo Fornaroli an opportunity to strengthen his contribution to McLaren’s ongoing development programme.
Barcelona could prove especially interesting in that regard. McLaren is expected to bring further updates to the Spanish Grand Prix and may also continue evaluating the front wing specification that was introduced in Canada before being temporarily set aside.
As a result, the opening practice session could provide valuable information not only for the team’s engineers but also for Leonardo Fornaroli himself, who will have another excellent opportunity to build experience at the highest level of motorsport while taking an important step forward in his Formula 1 development.
