F1 | Promise kept: the sweet story behind Sainz’s podium in Baku
Carlos Sainz Jr. crossed the finish line at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix in third place, behind Max Verstappen and George Russell. For much of the race, the Madrid-born driver had managed to hold onto the second place he earned in qualifying but, due to a different strategy, he ultimately had to yield to George Russell’s Mercedes #63. With this result, Carlos Sainz Jr. gave Williams its first podium in four years. The last time the team achieved this feat was with George Russell at the 2021 Belgian Grand Prix.
Beyond hard work: a touching gesture

Behind Carlos Sainz’s third-place finish, in addition to his driving skill and determination, there was also a small, heartfelt gesture.
The meaning of the unicorn
At the Baku Grand Prix, Carlos Sainz Jr. added a subtle detail to his helmet. Over the years, F1 drivers have increasingly customized their helmets for a variety of reasons: to celebrate a home race, a special circuit, or an important occasion. Carlos Sainz didn’t completely redesign his helmet but added a small, almost imperceptible detail with significant meaning.
Alex Albon and Carlos Sainz are featured in a series of videos on the Williams social media channels called “Call Carbono,” where fans can ask the drivers questions. In the latest video, a young fan asked Sainz, “How should I name my unicorn plush toy? Sprinkles or Sparkles?” She then added, “Could you wear a unicorn sticker on your helmet all year?” While the fan didn’t choose a name, the promise was kept. A small unicorn appeared on Carlos Sainz’s helmet, which has now become a mascot for the Williams team.
Team principal James Vowles, in a video posted after the race, also showed the Baku GP trophy with the unicorn attached to its base, promising that the sticker will remain for a long time.
