At the recent Azerbaijan Grand Prix in Baku, Mercedes and its drivers delivered a solid weekend that temporarily elevated the team to second place in the constructors’ championship, surpassing Ferrari, which dropped to third by just four points.
A standout performance came from George Russell, who battled a seasonal illness throughout the weekend. On Thursday, the driver skipped the press conference due to not being in peak physical condition. After a strong Saturday qualifying session, finishing fifth just behind teammate Kimi Antonelli in fourth, Russell went on to deliver an excellent race, ultimately finishing on the podium in second place.
Following the race, George Russell spoke to F1Tv about his expectations for the upcoming Singapore GP on October 5: “Today’s cooler temperatures meant that everything revolved around keeping the tires in the optimal heat range, and that’s where we excel, as we saw in Las Vegas last year and in Canada this year. Singapore will be a slightly different story, but this result gives both Kimi and me hope for stronger performances in the remaining races.”
Mercedes and cooler temperatures: a winning combination
It is no secret that Mercedes tends to perform better in cooler race conditions, as demonstrated in Baku. With Singapore’s forecast predicting similar conditions, George Russell and Kimi Antonelli can certainly aim for a strong night-race performance. McLaren may still be the main rival, but Mercedes will be in a promising position to challenge for victory.
