Williams Racing has demonstrated strong competitiveness in the 2025 Formula 1 season, particularly with Alexander Albon, who has already secured more points and stronger race results compared to his teammate Carlos Sainz. While Carlos Sainz brings invaluable experience and has contributed to technical improvements within the team, he has struggled to achieve the same level of performance in both races and qualifying sessions, revealing a clear performance gap on track when compared to Albon. The Spanish driver recently addressed this issue in an interview with Motorsport.
“Sometimes I’m faster, other times I’m within the same tenth or a tenth slower than Alex [Albon] each weekend, and I know I can achieve similar results — sometimes better, sometimes slightly worse — but certainly not such a marked difference in points and race results as we’ve seen over the last twelve races, for example,” Carlos Sainz explained.
“It’s a bit of a strange feeling because I feel competitive and fast. When I manage to put together a strong lap with the Williams car, I still see a lot of potential and plenty of time to exploit,” he continued. “However, I think that in these twelve races we have only maximized the weekend’s performance on one or two occasions, and based on my experience of a year in Formula 1, that is really very little.”
Carlos Sainz’s reflections highlight the ongoing challenge for experienced drivers when adapting to a team in transition. While Alexander Albon has consistently extracted peak performance from the car, Carlos Sainz is still searching for the perfect balance between speed, setup, and strategy to convert his pace into consistent results. Despite the difficulties, the Spanish driver remains focused on unlocking the full potential of the Williams FW48 and narrowing the gap with his teammate as the 2025 season continues.
