Will Max Verstappen leave Red Bull? “There’s also a chance I won’t wake up tomorrow morning”. Max Verstappen discusses Christian Horner’s exit from Red Bull.

Max Verstappen, Red Bull 2024 F1

Max Verstappen remains the central figure in the Formula 1 paddock as speculation over his future with Red Bull Racing continues to intensify. The reigning four-time Formula 1 World Champion spoke openly about his situation during the media day at the 2025 Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps, where he addressed the recent upheaval within his team and responded to growing rumors regarding a possible exit from Red Bull.

Just two weeks after the sudden and dramatic departure of longtime team principal Christian Horner, who was replaced immediately by Laurent Mekies, questions surrounding Verstappen’s long-term commitment to Red Bull have become more pressing. The Dutch driver did not shy away from the topic, making it clear that he had no involvement in Horner’s removal—despite what international media outlets may have suggested.

“The management and, of course, the shareholders decided that they wanted a change,” Verstappen explained when asked about the leadership shake-up. “They are the ones running the team. I am the driver. Whatever decisions they make, they are fully within their rights. That’s essentially how things unfolded. When we look back at Red Bull’s 20 years with Christian Horner, I think we’ve had many great seasons and incredible success.”

Max Verstappen went on to reveal that he had been informed of Horner’s dismissal just thirty minutes before the official announcement. “It was the shareholders who told me. I have a good relationship with them, and I think it’s quite normal that someone within the team is informed ahead of the public announcement. It seems like standard procedure to me.”

However, Verstappen refrained from expressing whether or not the news came as a surprise to him. “It’s not like they just said, ‘this is what we’ve decided,’ and then hung up. There was a conversation. I don’t need to get into the specifics of what was said, but I replied that if they were convinced this was the right direction to take, then they should follow through with it. I’m just the driver,” he reiterated.

Could Horner’s Exit Impact Verstappen’s Future at Red Bull?
When directly questioned about whether Christian Horner’s departure might influence his own plans regarding Red Bull, Verstappen responded with his trademark dry humor: “There’s also a chance I won’t wake up tomorrow. So… I wouldn’t be driving anymore! Life is unpredictable,” he said, with a hint of sarcasm.

Despite the turbulence, Verstappen emphasized that he is currently content with his role and future prospects. “Overall, I’m quite satisfied with where I am at the moment. Hopefully—and this has always been the goal since we signed the new contract—I’ll be racing here until the end of my career,” the Dutch driver concluded, reaffirming his long-term intentions with the Milton Keynes-based outfit.
