The Verstappen–Mercedes topic was one of the most widely discussed storylines of the 2025 Formula 1 season. The difficulties experienced by Red Bull in the opening races of the championship reignited speculation about a possible future away from Milton Keynes for the four-time world champion. In this context, Max Verstappen has confirmed that contacts with Mercedes did take place, while also clarifying the real scope of those conversations.
According to the Dutch driver, these were exploratory discussions that never developed into a concrete negotiation for a potential move in 2026. The situation remained informal, without any advanced talks or formal offers being put on the table.
The rumors gained further momentum ahead of the British Grand Prix, when George Russell publicly revealed that Max Verstappen’s entourage had been in contact with the Brackley-based team. Adding further intrigue was Toto Wolff’s stance, as the Mercedes team principal stopped short of issuing a firm denial, which only fueled speculation about a potential blockbuster move.
Verstappen clears the air
It was Max Verstappen himself who addressed the situation ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix, aiming to separate fact from fiction. The Dutchman, who remains under contract with Red Bull until 2028, confirmed the existence of contacts with Mercedes but downplayed their significance.
“I don’t want to lie. There have definitely been conversations,” Verstappen said. “But at the same time, everything was very friendly and transparent. Nothing more than that.”
Those words effectively closed the door, at least for now, on the idea of an imminent switch. There were no advanced negotiations and no formal talks regarding a move for the 2026 season, only open discussions during a period of technical uncertainty for Red Bull.
More than performance: what really matters to Max
The Verstappen–Mercedes discussion cannot be viewed purely through the lens of on-track performance. The driver himself explained that any potential decision to change teams would go far beyond the competitiveness of a single-seater.
“For me, it’s not just about Formula 1,” Verstappen explained. “There are many things that need to line up for me to make a change. Future roles, things like that.”
These comments highlight a broader view of his career, one that includes long-term perspectives and responsibilities beyond racing, as well as his activities outside Formula 1.
Verstappen also emphasized his deep connection with the Red Bull environment, a team that has been part of his journey since 2014.
“So if I were ever to make a change, it would obviously be very important for me, because this place feels like a second family, and that’s not easy to replicate,” he said.
The world champion went on to clarify that any potential departure from Red Bull would never be driven solely by the desire for a faster car or a different working environment.
“A change, if I ever made one, wouldn’t just be because I need a faster F1 car or a different environment. There are many things around my Formula 1 career and the activities I do outside of F1 that all need to align,” Verstappen added.
In conclusion, the Verstappen–Mercedes storyline currently fits more into the natural balancing act of the driver market than into a genuine scenario of an imminent transfer. While contacts did take place, Verstappen’s contractual stability and strong personal bond with Red Bull make a switch, at least in the short term, unlikely.
