With the 2025 Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix approaching, McLaren driver Oscar Piastri has spoken out about the controversial events of the recent Silverstone race. On the Thursday media day at Spa-Francorchamps, the Australian talent shared his reflections on the penalty he received during the British Grand Prix, offering both introspection and a subtle message to the FIA regarding racing standards.
This was the first time Oscar Piastri publicly addressed the incident since post-race tensions emerged at Silverstone. His comments were measured yet pointed, revealing how the situation has influenced his mindset and overall approach to racing in Formula 1.
The McLaren driver made it clear that while he’s not openly challenging the FIA’s authority, he still holds firm opinions about what happened at Silverstone. The incident and subsequent penalty have, in his view, triggered a change not only in his driving strategy but also in his communication with race control.
A new mindset after Silverstone
Speaking during the pre-race press conference, Oscar Piastri admitted that he has spent considerable time reflecting on the events at Silverstone:
“There’s been a learning process on both sides,” he said. “Personally, I still have my own opinion about what happened and the decision that followed, but at this point, it’s all in the past.”
He was referring to the overtaking maneuver that led to his penalty in the British Grand Prix:
“It was a move I had already made before — and one that other drivers have also done — in exactly the same way. If it’s now considered a penalty, that’s fine. At least I know going forward.”
Oscar Piastri, with a touch of irony and a clear sense of determination, continued:
“I just won’t brake that hard anymore.”
This line wasn’t just directed at his competitors — it was also a message to the stewards and the FIA.
“We’ve had some discussions with the FIA, and now the limits are clearer. For me, it’s simple: just brake a little less.”
This shows a more calculated and pragmatic Piastri, one who has taken the lesson without abandoning his competitiveness. His comments indicate a readiness to adapt and be more strategic, balancing raw speed with political awareness of Formula 1’s evolving regulatory environment.
As the Belgian Grand Prix weekend gets underway, the spotlight is once again on Oscar Piastri. Many in the paddock are eager to see how he responds on track after what could be a defining moment in his maturing career.
