Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen spoke to the media regarding rumors of his departure from Red Bull following the 2025 season. There seems to be a clause in his contract with Christian Horner’s team that would allow him to leave the team.
The Max Verstappen-Red Bull relationship is now historic. He signed with the Austrian team in the 2017 Formula One season. Considering his two years with Toro Rosso, it goes back to 2015. In recent seasons, he has managed to break all records: nineteen wins in a season comprising twenty-two races. That bond, which seemed unbreakable, has been questioned in recent months. Many teams are interested in the world champion: Mercedes has clearly expressed its interest in Verstappen. Toto Wolff reportedly wanted him at Brackley as early as next year.
Another team that has been widely discussed is Aston Martin. After acquiring Adrian Newey and with the potential engine supply from Honda, Lawrence Stroll could rebuild the perfect trio to start a new dominance in the future of Formula 1.
In an interview with Sky Italia, Max Verstappen was asked if it is true that there is a clause in his contract with Red Bull allowing him to leave before 2028.
“Maybe yes, maybe no. I repeat that I’m not thinking about it right now because there are many things I want to try to understand and improve upon from past years. What happens after is still too far away, and at the moment I’m not focused on it. I’ve been in this group for a very long time. Frequently changing teams isn’t positive, and it’s something I don’t want to do at this stage of my career. I want to build a long, stable, and good relationship with all the members of a team and feel at home.” – the Dutch driver explained – “My next step, if I ever take it, will be the last. It could also be a renewal with the team; for now, everything is up in the air.” – Max Verstappen concluded.
