Will Madrid replace Barcelona? Fernando Alonso shares his views on F1 Spain’s GP future. Fernando Alonso expresses confidence that Barcelona will remain on the F1 calendar .

Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin 2024

During the media day in Barcelona, Alonso spoke about the possibility that the F1 calendar might no longer include Barcelona. The Spanish driver is ready to race his home GP on the Catalan circuit. However, in recent months, the presence of the Barcelona round on the F1 calendar has been questioned. Fernando Alonso then explained his point of view on this possibility.

F1 is expanding its boundaries more and more. Beyond the many events organized in America and Asia, changes are also coming to the European part of the calendar.

Specifically regarding Spain, the entry of the Madrid circuit has been announced. It will be a street circuit where drivers will speed through the city streets.

This new entry could put the Barcelona round at risk. Just like Imola, the Catalan race would represent the second event in a single country, with F1 potentially sidelining other countries that do not host any World Championship rounds.

Barcelona out of the calendar?
Fernando Alonso is convinced that the Catalan circuit will not be heavily affected by Madrid’s entry into F1. “I don’t think we will lose Barcelona. This is my opinion and also my wish.”

The Spaniard reiterated that he appreciates the new tracks, which bring innovation to the championship. “But at the same time, we must keep some traditional circuits where the history of Formula 1 was written and created. And I think Formula 1 and Barcelona are closely linked.” – the Aston Martin driver pointed out.

He emphasized the importance of the Barcelona circuit, which for the teams represents a great technical testing ground thanks to the completeness of its layout.

Finally, Alonso reiterated how the circuit is committed to proving it has what it takes to remain on the Formula 1 calendar. “In the last two or three years, all the paddock facilities, the grandstands, everything has reached a new level. And Barcelona has been here for two or three decades, and it will be here for the next 10, 20, 30, 40 years. And some venues will only be temporarily on the calendar and then probably disappear again. So, we can’t lose Barcelona.”
