The difficulties encountered by the RB20 in the first part of the season didn’t seem serious, considering how easily Max Verstappen was able to win. However, the Dutchman often expressed dissatisfaction with the car, in a team shaken by the death of its owner and losing various members. Sergio Perez revealed that he received apologies from some Red Bull Racing engineers after the difficulties he and his teammate faced at the Italian Grand Prix. It was one of the worst weekends in recent memory for Red Bull, with the Dutchman managing to finish only in sixth place.
Sergio Perez, like his teammate Max Verstappen, pointed out to Red Bull Racing from the start of the season that there were issues with the RB20. He now believes that the problems have been understood and that the team can make progress again.
The Mexican driver started the season in great form, earning a contract renewal well in advance. However, his performance later declined; while Max Verstappen secured several wins and podiums, Sergio Perez faced numerous criticisms for his drop in form, though it was believed that no radical changes were necessary at the time.
In recent races, even Max Verstappen has encountered difficulties, raising doubts about whether the problem could be the car, so much so that the team sought feedback from Perez as well. “In a way, yes. To be honest, some engineers came to me after Monza and apologized in a way. Because now the issues I was talking about are much clearer,” said the Mexican on the Thursday before the Singapore GP.
“But also, in all honesty, I’ve always had the support of all the engineers. There’s also been speculation around this issue. And as they say, the problem was that I wasn’t focused enough on my races or other things. But at the end of the day, I’m happy to have discovered the problem and to be able to focus on it to improve,” he added.
The weekends in Monza and Baku were particularly difficult for them. The Mexican driver received numerous criticisms for not matching Max Verstappen ’s performances. However, the question arises whether the observed differences could also be attributed to the car, which might not be fully suited to Sergio Perez’s driving style.
