Former F1 boss warns new 2026 regulations could confuse drivers and cost spectators
New F1, criticism floods in
“Formula E on steroids,” “You need a degree to drive,” “Let Formula 1 be Formula 1”: the 2026 F1 revolution has sparked plenty of debate. During the pre-season, criticism from drivers has multiplied over the new concepts and driving styles, which are not naturally suited to them. These ideas may just need time to be absorbed – by both drivers and fans – but for now, they are met with skepticism.
Among the critics is Bernie Ecclestone, a man with extensive experience in F1 rule changes, having overseen and experienced many. The former F1 boss broadly agrees with Max Verstappen and would prefer cars built with simpler concepts.
Ecclestone’s thoughts
“The DNA of Formula 1 is that it is a world championship for drivers, not engineers,” he told sport.de. “There will be confusion at the start of the season because everyone will have to relearn Formula 1. And the rules certainly do not favor Max or his driving style. It’s more about thinking about the regulations than actually racing – what drivers should or shouldn’t do.”
“Formula 1 now competes more with Formula E,” he added. “Fans might like it, but I don’t think so. The risk is that we will lose spectators. I sincerely hope I am wrong.”
