Why Fernando Alonso faces Aston Martin’s crisis with calm: “This is not like McLaren 2015”. Fernando Alonso reflects on Aston Martin's 2024 struggles.

Fernando Alonso, Aston Martin, 2025 F1

Fernando Alonso stated that the difficult period Aston Martin is currently going through is “of a different nature” compared to his second, disappointing stint at McLaren in Formula 1.

Although Aston Martin has taken a clear step back from the strong performances seen in 2023, Fernando Alonso—known for his bluntness—has maintained a surprisingly calm attitude and continues to show confidence in the team throughout this first part of the season. While many see Aston Martin’s current slump as reminiscent of the Spaniard’s second, dreadful spell with McLaren, Alonso was keen to stress that he is handling the situation in a completely different way. Part of his more composed and measured approach at 43 years old is due to the success he found in other racing categories, including victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans.

“Yes, it’s different. I’m also at a different stage in my career,” said the Aston Martin driver. “Maybe in 2018 I needed to prove something, that I was still capable of winning, of enjoying success and victory again.

“It seemed like I needed that, even just to relax more and appreciate what I do. After winning Le Mans and Daytona, trying out other categories and being competitive and fast in all of them, I think I calmed down, and now I know I can wait a few more months or, in this case, even a few years [before winning again].”

Trust in Aston Martin
“2023 was also a good boost for me, arriving at Aston Martin, getting results and recognition. Now, with 2026, the new rules and Adrian (Newey) coming onboard, this period of waiting we’re experiencing this year feels very different.

“We’re not competitive, we won’t score many points—even if we didn’t score any—we’re still very focused and motivated to be contenders next year. This situation is definitely very different compared to the one I found myself in when I returned to McLaren in 2015.” –  the former Ferrari and McLaren driver concluded.
