The championship battle heated up in Canada, but for former F1 driver Jacques Villeneuve, Lando Norris might still hold a significant advantage over Oscar Piastri.
Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris lead the drivers’ championship standings, chased by Max Verstappen. The Australian driver has a 22-point lead over Lando Norris and 43 over Max Verstappen. In Canada, both McLaren drivers struggled, and the race turned into a nightmare at least for the team’s number 4 driver. Despite Oscar Piastri being the World Championship leader, former F1 driver Jacques Villeneuve believes Lando Norris may still have chances.
The Canadian GP weekend was very challenging for Lando Norris. After qualifying only seventh, the British driver faced a comeback race to avoid losing too many points to his teammate, who started from fourth. In an attempt to overtake Oscar Piastri, Norris made a misjudgment that ruined his comeback.
The outsider’s advantages
According to 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve, Norris’s current position in the standings might work in his favor because all eyes are now on Oscar Piastri and no longer on him. Speaking to Sky Sports F1, the former driver said: “Now Norris knows what Piastri will do in the upcoming races. He won’t be surprised anymore.”
Villeneuve concluded with a thought about Norris: “He was faster. He was generally faster in races. He just needs to fix qualifying because he had some ups and downs, but he still has a speed advantage. [Norris] is behind in points, so he’s an outsider, and that could help him.”
