On November 15, 2020, Lewis Hamilton won the Turkish Grand Prix and claimed his seventh world championship, equaling Michael Schumacher.
Long live the King
His performance in Istanbul that Sunday was remarkable, with tire management on intermediates that only a talent like his could achieve.
With that triumph, the Briton firmly cemented his place in the Olympus of Formula 1, realizing his childhood “impossible dream.” A child born in cold Stevenage, raised with the sole goal of leaving his mark, who became a motorsport legend.
He dedicated his emotional team radio to children: “This is for all the kids out there who dream the impossible. You can do it, I believe in you.” A dedication that also sounded like a message to his younger self.
The final step
Today, Hamilton is a man, and not just any man: he is an example, a role model for many people who, like him, will never give up.
That seventh title put him on par with the great Michael Schumacher, with the awareness that he could surpass him in the years to come.
That awareness remains, despite everything that has happened since that November 15, 2020. In 2021, he had his great chance, but it was brutally taken away in Abu Dhabi.
In 2022 and 2023, he struggled, concluding his only winless seasons. In 2024, he rose from the ashes. In 2025, at 40 years old (which he will turn in January), who knows if he might win with Ferrari.
It would be the perfect happy ending to a fantastic story that the King wants to continue writing, as he confirmed in earlier statements: “I’m working on a masterpiece, and I haven’t finished it yet.”
We will eagerly wait for you to finish it, Lewis, but you can be sure you’ve already given us so much to tell. You won’t be easily forgotten, and surely, even the young Hamilton who “dreamed the impossible” would be proud of you.
