This year, an Italian has returned to the Formula 1 starting grid. Antonio Giovinazzi was the last driver to represent Italy in the top tier of open-wheel racing before starting his adventure in the WEC with the Scuderia’s colors from Maranello.
Now it’s Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s turn, who impressed everyone by debuting in Melbourne, Australia, in heavy rain. Unfortunately, he had a tough qualifying session and had to start his comeback from 16th position. However, at the end of the race, he crossed the finish line in 4th place.
After this extraordinary performance, two great former Formula 1 drivers wanted to congratulate the young talent from Bologna on Sky Italia live. We are referring to Giancarlo Fisichella and Vitantonio Liuzzi. Below are their words.
Giancarlo Fisichella, the recent champion of the Italian GT series, a category in which Kimi had previously competed, proving he could handle covered wheels too, said: “After Kimi Antonelli’s fantastic race, which made us dream, starting 16th and finishing 4th, also showing he had the pace in extreme track conditions, in the rain, I can only wish him to continue like this.”
Along with him, Vitantonio Liuzzi also wanted to congratulate Kimi Antonelli, saying: “Hello everyone, I really wanted to give big congratulations to our Italian flagbearer Andrea Kimi Antonelli, who made a great debut in Melbourne. After a tough qualifying, he showed maturity and experience, despite his Formula 1 debut, to deliver a great race, doing everything at the right time, with a good strategy, and showing great composure in overtaking. It was a very sparkling start, which bodes well for the future.”
The young Mercedes driver’s Formula 1 career has just begun, but judging by his first two races, Andrea Kimi Antonelli has all the potential to do well in the coming years. All we can do now is wait and continue to follow him in this new adventure.
