Chasing a fifth consecutive title
The 2025 Azerbaijan Grand Prix, marked by Max Verstappen’s victory, Oscar Piastri’s retirement, and Lando Norris’s disappointing seventh place finish, has intensified discussions about whether the Red Bull superstar from Hasselt could still reopen the battle for the Drivers’ World Championship. Despite trailing the championship leader by 69 points, Verstappen’s chances of claiming a fifth consecutive title will only become clearer over the coming weeks. However, following the race in Baku, Verstappen already recorded a statistic that, considering how the season has unfolded so far, appears remarkable.
An incredible statistic
| Driver (Team) | Laps led |
|---|---|
| Oscar Piastri (McLaren) | 392 |
| Max Verstappen (Red Bull) | 281 |
| Lando Norris (McLaren) | 241 |
| Charles Leclerc (Ferrari) | 48 |
| George Russell (Mercedes) | 43 |
| Alessandro K. Antonelli (Mercedes) | 11 |
| Lewis Hamilton (Ferrari) | 2 |
| Alex Albon (Williams) | 1 |
Thanks to the 51 laps he led in the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the Red Bull #1 dramatically surpassed Lando Norris to take second place in the ranking of drivers who have led the most laps in a single Grand Prix this season. Verstappen now stands at 281 laps led, 40 more than Norris, who remains at 241 laps. Topping this particular leaderboard is championship leader Oscar Piastri, with 392 laps at the front. No other driver on the grid has led more than 50 laps this season: fourth-placed Charles Leclerc has only 48 laps in first place.
Max Verstappen’s statistic becomes even more impressive when considering that McLaren has led 62.1% of all laps completed at the front this season. On his own, Verstappen accounts for 27.6% of laps led, despite never having a car as competitive as the McLaren MCL39. Cold numbers, indeed, but they clearly demonstrate how the Dutch driver is currently the only competitor capable of challenging the dominance imposed on the championship by the Woking-based team.
