Valtteri Bottas to Mercedes in a new role? Return is possible return, but not as third driver. Recent reports suggest a surprising comeback for Valtteri Bottas at Mercedes.

Valtteri Bottas, 2024 F1

Recent reports suggest a surprising comeback for Valtteri Bottas at Mercedes. Naturally, he’s not in consideration for a main driver role, with both seats filled by George Russell and Andrea Kimi Antonelli. There was speculation about him taking on a reserve driver position, but that doesn’t seem to be the case; the role would be something different altogether.

After the announcement that Valtteri Bottas will not renew with Sauber for 2025, and with Gabriel Bortoleto confirmed alongside Nico Hülkenberg for the team transitioning to Audi in 2026, Valtteri Bottas finds himself without a seat on the F1 grid.

Various rumors have circulated about his potential plans. A return to Mercedes as a third driver was discussed, with Juan Pablo Montoya suggesting it would force Kimi Antonelli to work hard to keep his spot. The situation remains fluid, but there’s a new possibility emerging within the paddock.
