The moment is drawing closer. After the Qatar and Abu Dhabi GPs, Lewis Hamilton will bid farewell to Mercedes to join Ferrari in what has already been dubbed “the move of the century.” The British driver will aim to chase his eighth title with the Scuderia, which has been without a championship victory for nearly two decades.
Lewis Hamilton’s departure from the Silver Arrows marks the end of a multi-year chapter filled with numerous victories and some bitter disappointments. For this reason, the seven-time world champion is eager to end his relationship with the Brackley-based team on the best possible note. “I’ve experienced incredible moments; it’s hard to pick just one,” Lewis Hamilton said at the start of the Lusail weekend. “From moments with Lauda to the conversations and discussions we’ve had, it’s been an incredible journey.”
“Mercedes has always been like family, and I’ll always be a part of it. We’ve shared so many moments, overcome difficult periods, and I’ll never forget that,” added the number 44.
“I Don’t Need It”
Lewis Hamilton also spoke about his expectations for the Qatar and Abu Dhabi GPs, the final two races before his departure from Mercedes. “I don’t need to finish in a specific way. Of course, we want to end on the best possible note, and the image of me and George in Las Vegas was, I think, a fitting acknowledgment of the team’s work.”
“I’m not asking for anything special from these two races. They won’t define my bond with Mercedes. Of course, I’d love to say goodbye with a victory, but we’ll see,” Hamilton concluded.
