Mercedes is on the verge of celebrating another Formula 1 world championship, with Andrea Kimi Antonelli needing only ninth place at the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix to secure his maiden Drivers’ title. The Italian is also poised to become the first driver from his country to win the championship since Alberto Ascari, while Mercedes has an opportunity to claim its ninth Constructors’ Championship. However, team principal Toto Wolff has warned that the approaching success will not change the team’s mindset.
After missing his first, highly difficult opportunity to clinch the championship at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Andrea Kimi Antonelli now has a much more straightforward chance in Mexico City. The 20-year-old arrives at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez with the title firmly within reach, following an Austin victory that strengthened his position in the championship battle.
Mercedes closes in on both F1 world championships in Mexico
The Mexican Grand Prix promises to be a particularly significant weekend for the entire Mercedes team. The Brackley-based operation is almost certain to celebrate its first Drivers’ Championship in six years, while it also has the opportunity to secure its first Constructors’ title in five seasons.
However, the chances of Mercedes wrapping up both championships in Mexico are considerably different. While Andrea Kimi Antonelli needs only a modest points finish to secure the Drivers’ crown, the Constructors’ Championship remains more complicated because of Ferrari’s position in the standings.
Mercedes must gain 39 points on Ferrari at the Mexico City Grand Prix to secure the Constructors’ Championship immediately. Achieving that margin would be extremely difficult without both Ferrari drivers failing to score, leaving the team with a much more challenging task in the battle against the Italian manufacturer.
Nevertheless, with both championships approaching a potentially decisive stage, Toto Wolff is determined to ensure that Mercedes remains focused on its immediate objectives rather than becoming distracted by the possibility of celebrating early.
Toto Wolff highlights Mercedes upgrade problems after Austin
Although Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured victory in Austin, the United States Grand Prix also exposed some of the weaknesses that Mercedes must continue addressing. The team’s latest aerodynamic upgrade has delivered additional performance, but extracting those improvements consistently has proved more complicated than initially expected.
“Austin demonstrated the potential we have thanks to our latest upgrade, but it also highlighted the areas where we still need to work,” Toto Wolff explained ahead of the Mexico City Grand Prix.
“We’ve improved performance, but being able to exploit it consistently is proving more difficult than expected. George Russell was particularly affected by this last weekend and, as a team, our objective is to understand why and help bring the car into a better performance window.”
George Russell experienced a particularly difficult weekend in Texas, where his performance contrasted with that of his Mercedes teammate. Toto Wolff has already addressed the difficulties George Russell has faced compared with Andrea Kimi Antonelli, acknowledging the team’s responsibility to help the British driver extract more performance from the W17.
The Austrian manager’s comments underline that Mercedes still has work to do despite its strong championship position. Understanding why the latest upgrades have proved difficult to exploit remains an important objective as the team prepares for the challenges presented by the Mexican circuit.
Toto Wolff insists Mercedes will maintain the same mindset
With the Drivers’ Championship potentially being decided this weekend, Toto Wolff has made it clear that Mercedes will not change its approach. Rather than focusing on the celebrations that could follow Sunday’s race, he wants the team to remain disciplined and concentrate on executing each session correctly.
“The championships are getting closer, but our mindset doesn’t change,” Toto Wolff warned. “Thinking about the result won’t help us achieve it. We will remain disciplined, take each session as it comes and focus on executing the fundamentals well.”
That approach will also apply to Mercedes’ Friday practice programme, which includes a change to the driver line-up. Frederik Vesti will replace George Russell in the opening free practice session at the Mexico City Grand Prix, giving the Danish driver another opportunity behind the wheel of the W17.
Toto Wolff stressed that Frederik Vesti remains an important part of the Mercedes operation and expressed confidence in his ability to contribute to the team’s preparations.
“That also applies to Vesti, who will take George’s place in FP1. He’s an important member of our team and we know we can count on him to provide accurate and useful feedback as we work through Friday’s programme.”
How many points does Kimi Antonelli need to win the 2026 F1 title?
The championship countdown has already begun at Mercedes, and the situation is particularly favourable for Andrea Kimi Antonelli. A ninth-place finish in Mexico would be sufficient to mathematically secure the 2026 Drivers’ Championship, making the Italian’s first world title appear little more than a formality.
The Constructors’ Championship presents a different challenge. Mercedes would need to outscore Ferrari by 39 points during the Mexican Grand Prix weekend, a result that appears highly unlikely without a double retirement or another scoreless race for the Scuderia.
For Mercedes, the priority is therefore to maintain the same disciplined approach that has brought the team within reach of both titles. Andrea Kimi Antonelli has a major opportunity to make history in Mexico, but Toto Wolff’s message is clear: the team must continue concentrating on performance and execution rather than the championship celebrations that could soon follow.
