A relationship of trust beginning to crack?
The relationship between Mercedes and George Russell appears to be slowly showing signs of strain. After giving everything during his years at Williams to earn a seat alongside Lewis Hamilton, the British driver arrived at Brackley only to find that Mercedes was no longer the dominant force it had once been.
Having successfully stepped out of the shadow of a seven-time world champion and entering a new technical era, Russell seemed destined to become a Formula 1 title contender almost overnight. Instead, the Briton has struggled to find a consistent connection with the current Mercedes car, while his younger teammate has adapted far more comfortably.
At present, the gap between Mercedes’ two drivers stands at a remarkable 43 points in favour of Kimi Antonelli. However, the difference is not simply the result of mistakes or performance. Russell’s campaign has also been heavily affected by a series of unfortunate incidents that have repeatedly cost him valuable points.
A season full of bad luck
The latest setback came at the Canadian Grand Prix, where Russell was forced to retire while leading the race. It was another painful blow in a season that has already featured several frustrating moments.
Earlier in Japan, his strategy was compromised by the timing of a Safety Car period, while in China his qualifying session was disrupted by another technical issue. Speaking to the media in Montreal, Russell openly admitted that fortune had not been on his side.
“Luck is not on my side,” Russell said after the Canadian Grand Prix.
Seven days later, it appears the Mercedes driver still has not forgotten that frustration.
“Here I’m lucky”
Today, Russell shared a photograph with his girlfriend on social media accompanied by the caption: “Here I’m lucky.”
The message was clearly intended as a romantic and light-hearted comment, but many fans could not help noticing the contrast with his current sporting situation. While Russell appears to be enjoying greater success in his personal life, his Formula 1 campaign has been marked by a relentless run of misfortune.
Whether the post was simply a joke or a subtle reference to the setbacks that have affected his season, it quickly attracted attention among followers. With crucial races still ahead and Mercedes looking to recover ground, Russell will be hoping that the luck he joked about online finally starts appearing on the racetrack as well.
