Toto Wolff has praised Kimi Antonelli’s remarkable ability to handle pressure after the 19-year-old established a commanding lead in the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship. Six victories from the opening 11 races have made the Mercedes driver one of the season’s biggest stories, but it is his composure through both success and disappointment that has impressed his team principal most.
When Mercedes recognised the strength of its W17 for the 2026 season, George Russell was expected to deliver the team’s strongest results through his greater maturity and experience. Kimi Antonelli, meanwhile, was supposed to develop steadily and find more consistency after the highs and lows of his previous campaign.

Instead, the Italian has surprised almost everyone. Kimi Antonelli has claimed six victories, six pole positions, six fastest laps and nine podium finishes in only 11 Grands Prix, firmly establishing himself at the top of the 2026 Formula 1 drivers’ standings.
The Bologna-born driver leads Lewis Hamilton by 50 points and Mercedes team-mate George Russell by 59. His advantage has become substantial enough for Mercedes to address the possibility of favouring one driver, although the team has so far ruled out imposing team orders.
More than the results themselves, Kimi Antonelli’s management of the pressure surrounding his title challenge has attracted attention. His emotional control has been particularly striking given that he is still only 19 years old and is competing against far more experienced championship rivals.
Toto Wolff praises Kimi Antonelli’s response to pressure
In an interview with Belgian publication DH Les Sports on 25 July, Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff explained how Kimi Antonelli remains focused regardless of whether a race weekend produces success or disappointment.
“I was surprised by the way he handles the highs and lows over the course of a season. He is in his own bubble when he drives. And when he returns to the garage, he is impenetrable,” Toto Wolff said.
“Even in F2, his father Marco would approach him and he wouldn’t notice. He analyses everything and moves forward.”
That mentality has also helped Mercedes manage the competition between its two drivers. Despite the unexpected championship gap, the team continues to describe the Kimi Antonelli-George Russell rivalry as healthy.
Kimi Antonelli described as the opposite of an Italian driver stereotype
Toto Wolff believes Kimi Antonelli’s calm and analytical personality contrasts with the conventional image often associated with Italian racing drivers.
“He is the antithesis of the highly emotional Italian driver stereotype. He was shaped for F1. For the very best drivers, natural talent accounts for 90 per cent of performance. The remaining 10 per cent is work,” the Austrian explained.
According to Toto Wolff, Kimi Antonelli’s preparation for Formula 1 began long before his arrival at Mercedes, with his development carefully managed from childhood.
“With Kimi, the preparation for F1 began when he was eight years old. He was already exceptional at the time. Sometimes he has bad races, but he puts them aside and continues along his path.”
Kimi Antonelli’s immediate success was not anticipated even within Mercedes, where George Russell had been expected to lead the team’s championship campaign.
“Nobody expected it, least of all his team-mate George Russell,” Toto Wolff concluded.
