Toto Wolff is not mincing his words: according to the Mercedes team principal, Max Verstappen’s 2025 title hopes are now severely compromised. After the Dutchman’s spectacular comeback drive in Brazil, Toto Wolff highlighted the strength of Lando Norris’ advantage and the unlikelihood of a dramatic turnaround, fuelling debate over how the season might conclude.
World title already decided? Wolff reveals his view
According to Toto Wolff, Lando Norris’ 49-point margin is too large for Verstappen to realistically close:
“The advantage Lando has now is really very solid. But even he cannot afford a retirement, because in that case the situation would flip.”
The Mercedes boss added that, from a spectator’s perspective, it would be fascinating to see the championship decided at the final race. He also acknowledged the mental strength and consistency that Norris has shown:
“Lando Norris has been impressive in the last few races, with the way he kept his nerves under control and how he secured the points.”
McLaren’s management style
Despite speculation about internal tension, Toto Wolff praised Andrea Stella for how he has handled the Norris–Piastri pairing:
“As a team principal, you just need to maintain control and not allow any interference from the outside. I think the way they are managing the situation is excellent, letting them race.”
