Mercedes has praised the “healthy rivalry” between Kimi Antonelli and George Russell, insisting that their battle during the 2026 Formula 1 season involves no power games or hidden strategies. Despite competing directly for the drivers’ championship, deputy team principal Bradley Lord says both drivers remain focused on helping Mercedes win the constructors’ title.
Mercedes began the 2026 season with the car to beat, initially establishing George Russell as the championship favourite. The British driver had waited years for the opportunity to compete in machinery capable of delivering a Formula 1 title, but the first 11 races have not unfolded as he hoped.
Kimi Antonelli leads George Russell in Mercedes title battle
After completing his apprenticeship season in 2025, Kimi Antonelli has emerged as a leading championship contender and regularly beaten his more experienced team-mate. The young Italian has recorded six victories and six pole positions, establishing a commanding lead in the 2026 Formula 1 driver standings with 219 points.
George Russell is 59 points behind on 160 after struggling to establish an ideal feeling with the Mercedes W17. Numerous technical and reliability problems have also complicated his campaign, adding to concerns that he could risk assuming a supporting role within Mercedes if Kimi Antonelli’s momentum continues.
The Italian driver’s six victories have underlined his rapid development, although former Ferrari engineer Luigi Mazzola has explained why Kimi Antonelli is not yet a complete Formula 1 champion. His performances have nevertheless placed the two Mercedes drivers in a direct internal fight at the front of the championship.
Mercedes praises healthy Antonelli-Russell rivalry
The contest became particularly intense in Canada, where Kimi Antonelli and George Russell fought closely during both the Sprint and the Grand Prix. The British driver was ultimately forced to retire from the main race because of reliability problems.
Mercedes is nonetheless satisfied with the respectful and collaborative relationship that has developed between its drivers. Bradley Lord believes their approach contrasts with other Formula 1 team-mate relationships that have become increasingly strained under the pressure of a championship fight.
“The way they work together is impressive,” the Mercedes deputy team principal said. “We have seen in Formula 1 how relationships between team-mates can become very tense. George Russell and Kimi Antonelli want to beat each other because that is the nature of this sport, but it is a healthy rivalry.”
No power games or hidden strategies at Mercedes
Bradley Lord also dismissed any suggestion that political manoeuvring is influencing the relationship. While both drivers naturally want to win the individual championship, Mercedes believes they continue to prioritise the team’s wider objectives.
“There are no power games or hidden strategies between them,” Bradley Lord continued. “They are both focused on making the most of the opportunity the team has given them. Of course, they care about the drivers’ championship, but first and foremost they are focused on delivering results in the constructors’ championship to help the team win.”
The dynamic will become increasingly important if the fight between Kimi Antonelli and George Russell intensifies during the second half of the season. Mercedes currently has two drivers capable of challenging at the front, but Bradley Lord’s assessment suggests their rivalry has so far strengthened the team’s championship campaign rather than dividing it.
