Mental health has become a topic that many public figures, including those in F1, are addressing. In recent months, many have spoken about the importance of caring for mental well-being and how it is an issue that affects most people.
Lewis Hamilton had previously discussed this, delivering an important message to young people. The British driver has never hidden the fact that he suffered from bullying when he first entered the world of racing. His words greatly impacted *Mind*, a mental health charity. “When someone so influential talks about it, the message can have a significant impact,” said Joe Levenson, Head of Media at Mind.
Toto Wolff highlights its importance
In a lengthy interview with *The Guardian*, Toto Wolff spoke about how crucial mental health is, even for one of the most prominent figures in F1. The Mercedes Team Principal, who lost his father as a teenager, explained how that trauma profoundly shaped him. “I was fifteen and had to take charge of the situation. My mother wasn’t very present, so I grew up with my sister. When you suffer a lot at that age, sooner or later, that pain will resurface,” – the Mercedes team boss said.
“There are moments, like when I deal with death or illness, that make me feel bad. But that pain is never related to sports or work. I suffer when I have nothing to do, like during the summer break weeks,” added the Mercedes boss. “I feel more comfortable when my schedule is full.” – he pointed out.
Returning to the importance of mental health, Toto Wolff does not shy away from the topic. “There are days when you have to survive mentally. I’ve faced several difficult situations, like when a friend of mine took his own life. I think about it constantly, but you have to learn to live with it.”
“I think it’s important to talk about mental health, which is why I try to bring it up often. Now that I’m over fifty, I’ve learned to manage it. I think Schopenhauer was right—when you approach the end, you learn to appreciate life,” Toto Wolff concluded.
