F1 is ready to explore new solutions for its calendar: Toto Wolff suggests a double GP in China. This idea emerged after the Shanghai weekend, which saw a total of over 220,000 spectators. The Chinese market is growing, and there is great enthusiasm for motorsport, partly thanks to Zhou Guanyu, who could return to the grid in 2026.
It is now clear that the Circus has its eyes on Asia, Africa, and America. The top tier is becoming increasingly global, reaching every corner of the world that meets the strict contractual conditions set by Formula 1. The growth of F1 is noticeable, and more and more countries want to be part of it.
Important news is coming from Asia regarding Thailand: a Grand Prix could be held in Bangkok as early as 2028. An ambitious project that precedes the dreams of Malaysia and South Korea, which also want to bring back their own race. But Liberty Media flies where the market seems most promising, and after last weekend, the idea of a double Chinese race is gaining traction again.
Twice in China: F1 ready for a double Grand Prix
This is not the first time this idea has been whispered in the paddock. We had already mentioned last year the plans to build a new, large motorsport park. After the success of the Shanghai Grand Prix last week, Toto Wolff is also ready to assess its feasibility.
“I was on the starting grid and looked at all the grandstands on the main straight and the first corner,” explains the Austrian, quoted by SoyMotor.com. “Their enthusiasm and knowledge of Formula 1 is impressive. I mean, could there be a second race? Why not? It’s one of the world’s largest economies, so I would say yes, if we can keep the enthusiasm high.”
In 2025, only the United States and Italy will appear twice on the calendar. In 2026, Spain will join with the debut of Madrid. But in a constantly expanding Formula 1, it will be increasingly difficult for “smaller” European economies to maintain such opportunities.
