Mercedes on the second row with Antonelli
Andrea Kimi Antonelli was just 67 thousandths off pole position in the Miami GP Qualifying. The Mercedes driver will start from the second row in third position, while his teammate George Russell will line up right behind him in fifth, on the third row.
Team principal Toto Wolff commented on Qualifying by siding with Ferrari counterpart Frederic Vasseur in hoping for rain during the race: “Neither of the drivers had perfect laps,” he said. “Kimi made a small mistake in Turn 1 and George had oversteer in Turn 7. We knew it would be difficult to challenge the McLarens and Max Verstappen, so even though we’ll never be satisfied with P3 and P5, it was still a positive Qualifying. The weather forecast for the race is mixed, and we wouldn’t mind if there were a few rain showers. Our race pace is not as strong as McLaren’s in hotter conditions, and both Verstappen and the Ferraris have shown in recent races how fast they can be in similar circumstances. It’s an area we’re working hard to improve, and we hope to take a step forward in the next races.”
