Mercedes has been fined €5,000 by the FIA after George Russell skipped his mandatory post-race media commitments at the 2026 Mexico City Grand Prix, where team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured the Formula 1 world championship. Toto Wolff has defended the British driver’s decision to leave the circuit, describing his emotional state as understandable following what he called a “catastrophic moment” in his racing career.
George Russell departed the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez shortly after the race, heading directly to Brazil without speaking to the media. However, before leaving Mexico, the Mercedes driver made a point of personally congratulating Andrea Kimi Antonelli on his historic title triumph, a gesture that earned considerable praise from his team principal.
Mercedes fined €5,000 after George Russell skips Mexico GP interviews
It was a case of a collision on the opening lap, followed by an early departure after the race. George Russell’s difficult Mexican Grand Prix included contact with Isack Hadjar before the British driver decided not to attend his mandatory post-race interviews.
His absence constituted a breach of Article B10.1.4e of the FIA Formula 1 Regulations, resulting in a €5,000 fine imposed on Mercedes. Although the financial sanction is relatively minor in the context of Formula 1, the circumstances surrounding the decision provided a clear indication of George Russell’s disappointment.
The British driver had just watched team-mate Andrea Kimi Antonelli become the 2026 Formula 1 world champion after a season dominated by the young Italian. The achievement was particularly painful for George Russell, who had entered the campaign as the leading favourite for the championship but had ultimately been comprehensively outperformed by his 20-year-old Mercedes colleague.
His disappointment was compounded by his position in the Drivers’ Championship. Having already lost the title battle, George Russell also slipped from second to fourth in the standings, with Charles Leclerc now close behind him.
George Russell congratulates Kimi Antonelli despite painful F1 title defeat
Despite the frustration surrounding his own season, George Russell did not leave Mexico without acknowledging his team-mate’s achievement. Before departing the circuit, he stopped to congratulate Andrea Kimi Antonelli on becoming Formula 1 world champion.
It was a significant gesture of sportsmanship, particularly for a driver who had experienced such a difficult campaign after beginning the year with expectations of fighting for the championship. George Russell’s sporting and emotional disappointment was evident, but he still chose to recognise the Italian’s historic success.
Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff was quick to highlight that gesture when discussing the British driver’s condition following the race. The Austrian has worked closely with George Russell for many years, with Mercedes having invested considerable faith in his development and ability.
“I saw George after the race, when he was on the FIA scales, and he was clearly distraught about what had happened. It was a great show of sportsmanship from him to go and see Kimi,” Toto Wolff explained.
The Mercedes boss acknowledged how difficult the situation must have been for George Russell, particularly given the driver’s contribution to bringing Andrea Kimi Antonelli into the team.
“I’ve known George for a very long time, and I know that, for an athlete, this is a situation… He’s going through a difficult time, but he also played a part in bringing that young driver into this team.”
Toto Wolff calls Russell’s Mexico GP disappointment a catastrophic moment
Toto Wolff believes the Mexico City Grand Prix effectively reflected the difficulties George Russell has experienced throughout the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Mercedes team principal suggested that the British driver had possessed the pace required to win the race, only for a problem with the car’s energy deployment to compromise his chances almost immediately.
“I saw him, and for a racing driver, this is a catastrophic moment. Perhaps today’s race was, in a way, a reflection of his season. It was a race he should have won. We had the necessary pace with the car, but we compromised his race on the very first straight. The energy deployment wasn’t what we expected.”
The admission was particularly significant because Toto Wolff placed responsibility on Mercedes for the technical problem that undermined George Russell’s race. Rather than questioning the driver’s performance, he acknowledged that the team had failed to provide the conditions required to maximise his chances.
The setback came against the backdrop of an increasingly difficult internal comparison at Mercedes. Earlier in the championship, Toto Wolff had already addressed George Russell’s struggles against Andrea Kimi Antonelli, taking responsibility for aspects of the team’s performance.
Toto Wolff defends George Russell’s decision to leave Mexico GP early
Far from criticising George Russell for missing his media commitments, Toto Wolff expressed strong sympathy for the British driver. The Mercedes team principal insisted that the emotional consequences of such a difficult sporting moment should not be underestimated, particularly after a season in which expectations and results had moved in opposite directions.
“At this moment, I’m absolutely on his side. I’ve been in situations where it’s really very difficult to deal with what you’re feeling. The fact that he didn’t do the media interviews or that he left the circuit is absolutely understandable. In fact, I would have been surprised if he had stayed. This is absolutely a gesture that deserves respect.”
For Mercedes, the Mexican Grand Prix therefore produced contrasting emotions. Andrea Kimi Antonelli celebrated his first Formula 1 world championship, while George Russell endured another painful result in a campaign that had promised so much at the beginning of the year.
Nevertheless, the British driver’s decision to congratulate his team-mate before departing Mexico demonstrated the mutual respect that remains between the two Mercedes drivers. With the next round taking place in São Paulo, George Russell will now have an opportunity to regroup following one of the most emotionally difficult weekends of his season.
