Speaking to the media in the paddock, Carlos Sainz elaborated on what went wrong: “We simply didn’t do a good qualifying session. The first run was a disaster with traffic and problems bringing the tyres up to temperature. Then in the second attempt, we somehow managed to make things even worse.”
The Spaniard admitted he was unable to assess the true potential of the car throughout the session: “I’m leaving this qualifying without knowing where the limit was or what performance the car had, because we didn’t even complete two proper laps.”
Carlos Sainz had skipped Thursday’s media day for health reasons, but he clarified that his physical condition had no influence on the poor performance. “Physically I’m not at 100%, but our pace in FP1 showed I could have done a strong lap. We just put ourselves in a position where we never managed to complete one,” he explained.
Looking ahead to Saturday, the forecast points to possible rain and strong winds over Interlagos — conditions that could potentially reshuffle the order and give Williams a chance to recover. “It’s impossible to know what we could have achieved today, but I hope tomorrow the situation changes,” Carlos Sainz added before leaving the paddock.
At the front of the grid, Lando Norris will start from pole position, followed by Andrea Kimi Antonelli and Oscar Piastri. But the spotlight, at least for today, remains on Carlos Sainz — the main protagonist of a nightmare Friday that raises serious questions about Williams’ weekend in Brazil.
