Oscar Piastri ended the 2025 season in third place in the drivers’ championship. After spending much of the year at the top of the standings, the Australian slipped back and was unable to recover in time, ultimately letting the drivers’ title slip through his fingers.
Many have been quick to label him as a driver overwhelmed by pressure, someone who missed the opportunity of a lifetime. Yet taking a step back and looking at the bigger picture offers a very different and far more nuanced view of the situation.
Oscar Piastri made his Formula 1 debut with McLaren in 2023 alongside Lando Norris. From the very beginning, he showed clear talent, but his team-mate’s greater experience was evident. In 2023, Oscar Piastri finished ninth in the drivers’ championship, while Norris placed sixth. In 2024, the Australian climbed to fourth, with Norris ending the season as runner-up.
These results reflected a steady and consistent progression, with Oscar Piastri gradually closing the gap to the British driver. Then came 2025, a year in which McLaren demonstrated constant superiority over the rest of the grid, even if Lando Norris did not immediately stand out.
During the first half of the season, it was Oscar Piastri who dominated the championship. Taking a moment to reflect, it is remarkable to consider that in only his third year in Formula 1, Oscar Piastri came within touching distance of the ultimate prize in the sport. And how far did he miss out by? Just 13 points.
Piastri, final thoughts
“I think I can be very proud of the season I’ve had,” the Australian driver admitted. “If I compare it to my first two years in Formula 1, this year has been far superior to the previous two. In the end, even if the final result isn’t exactly what I hoped for, I’ve gained optimism and strength, proving to myself what I was capable of achieving over the course of the season.”
“These things aren’t necessarily tied to results. So I think, for my part, I’ll continue on this path in the future. It’s only my third attempt in F1. I hope I still have a long way to go, but this year I’ve definitely learned lessons that will make me stronger,” he continued.
“There were lessons directly linked to my driving, to how I can improve in different conditions and become a better driver in every aspect. I also learned a lot outside the car: how to deal with adversity and manage difficult moments. I understood a great deal about myself in these situations.”
Being able to face such a disappointment and turn it into motivation is not something everyone can do; it is the perfect mindset for a champion. Oscar Piastri may not have won the championship, but in his third Formula 1 season he claimed seven Grand Prix victories, six pole positions, sixteen podium finishes and a total of 410 points. With the right mentality and the experience he has already gained, his future in Formula 1 promises to be extraordinary.
