Lando Norris was the undisputed star of the FIA Gala in Tashkent. It could hardly have been otherwise, as the British driver – finally relaxed and happy after securing his first Formula 1 World Championship – instantly regained the charisma and good humor that had distinguished him during the early years of his F1 career.
When he took the stage to collect the World Champion award, the McLaren driver also delivered a brief improvised show alongside FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem – freshly re-elected – which drew laughter from the entire audience.
Back-and-forth with the president
Reflecting on the highs and lows experienced during the season by himself and the McLaren team, Lando Norris said without mincing words: “Me and all of us made our fair share of mistakes and sh**s.” The curse word, considering the FIA’s notoriously strict policies on public language, briefly froze the room.
“Can I say it here? Is it okay?” Lando Norris added, smiling and acknowledging the small slip-up. Immediately, President Mohammed Ben Sulayem chimed in, turning to Lando Norris and saying, “Ten thousand!” – a reference to the hefty fines the federation usually imposes on anyone letting slip a swear word in public contexts like this.
“Sorry… I’ve been fined! – Lando Norris continued, playing along – but now I can pay it!” The audience erupted into laughter, enjoying the playful exchange between the champion and the FIA president.
