Fernando Alonso, two-time Formula 1 World Champion, still remembers the controversy that unfolded 18 years ago at McLaren. Back in 2007, the team split into opposing factions during the internal rivalry between Fernando Alonso and rookie Lewis Hamilton, ultimately paving the way for Kimi Räikkönen to snatch the championship.
Ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos, Dazn Spain asked Alonso to compare that 2007 situation with today’s scenario. The Spaniard delivered a sharp response: “There’s always that risk, but I don’t think the current situation is exactly the same. I remember Ron Dennis in China 2007 saying, ‘Our race is against Fernando. Not against Kimi.’ Imagine if now Zak Brown said, ‘Our race is against Oscar, not Max.’ Clearly, the situation today is very different.”
Alonso also reflected on Aston Martin’s realistic expectations for the remainder of the 2025 season. Currently seventh in the Constructors’ Championship, the team is not targeting miracles in the final four races. “There are four Grands Prix left and we need to approach them with a positive mindset,” Fernando Alonso explained. “Looking at the numbers, I wouldn’t expect any miracles. We’ve always been very consistent, so why should one of these four weekends suddenly be extraordinary? I’ll get in the car thinking it could be a good weekend and that we might score some points.”
Even after nearly two decades since the McLaren controversy, Fernando Alonso remains candid and measured, underlining that while historic rivalries are part of F1’s drama, the present challenges with Aston Martin are focused on consistency, strategy, and making the most of each race as the 2025 season reaches its conclusion.
