Kimi Antonelli is spending his summer holiday in Sardinia, where several members of the Formula 1 world have also gathered for a few days of relaxation. The young Italian leads the Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship by 50 points over Lewis Hamilton, although his advantage could have been even greater without reliability problems affecting his Mercedes W17.

“I genuinely believe he is an extraordinary asset for Formula 1. He is a fresh young man, still very new to this environment and very open to everything that is happening to him. He has attracted so many new fans thanks to the way he presents himself, which I find truly fantastic. From a sporting perspective, he has demonstrated that he is very strong.”
Despite still carrying the appearance of a teenager, Kimi Antonelli’s focus and maturity have particularly impressed the Formula 1 chief.
“He is very different from many other drivers, but he has incredible concentration. Let us not forget that, without the two retirements caused by technical problems, he would have an even bigger championship lead today. This demonstrates that he is already an extremely solid driver.”
Kimi Antonelli could bring a different colour to Monza
Formula 1’s return to Italy could provide one of the clearest demonstrations yet of Kimi Antonelli’s growing popularity. Monza is traditionally dominated by Ferrari red, but Stefano Domenicali believes the Mercedes driver’s championship challenge could change the visual identity of the grandstands.
“Monza will be an incredible event, and perhaps for the first time we will see a different colour in the grandstands alongside the traditional red.”
The possibility of an extraordinary home reception comes as Mercedes considers a potentially difficult strategic decision for the Italian Grand Prix. Both of its drivers will need to take another power unit before the end of the season, and Toto Wolff has identified Monza as one possible venue for Kimi Antonelli’s grid penalty.

“After a year in which he received a lot of criticism, and during which I believe Toto Wolff and Mercedes protected him exceptionally well, he is confirming that he is one of the most interesting talents to have arrived in Formula 1 recently. And, as you can imagine, this has even greater significance for Italian fans.”

“Today he has a fantastic relationship with all the other drivers. Naturally, that relationship could change when he starts winning championships, but that is part of the nature of competition.”
