Max Verstappen’s Red Bull future could be confirmed at Zandvoort. The perfect stage emerges for Max Verstappen to end Red Bull speculation.

Max Verstappen, Red Bull RB22, 2026 F1

Max Verstappen’s Red Bull future could be publicly confirmed at Zandvoort when Formula 1 returns from its summer break. After months of tension and ambiguous messages about his plans, the Dutch world champion now appears increasingly likely to honour his contract and remain with the team for the 2027 season.

Max Verstappen has not yet explicitly announced what he intends to do next year. However, his comments during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend appeared to close the door almost completely on the latest speculation surrounding his future, while former Formula 1 driver Robert Doornbos believes an announcement could arrive at the Dutch Grand Prix.

Max Verstappen’s Red Bull future becomes clearer

A recent interview given by Max Verstappen to RacingNews365 during the Hungarian Grand Prix weekend seemed to bring the driver-market discussion surrounding the four-time world champion close to a conclusion, at least regarding 2027.

Although the Dutchman stopped short of making an explicit commitment, the words he reserved for Red Bull appeared to represent an attempt to ease internal tensions and encourage everyone to work in the same direction. That marked a notable change in tone after months of severe criticism directed at the car produced in Milton Keynes.

“Within the team, I am simply myself. Over the years, I have built an excellent relationship with many people, and I say things as they are. I am very straightforward because that is how I like to operate, and they behave in the same way with me,” Max Verstappen said.

The comments follow months of speculation about the Dutch driver’s future, including renewed discussion of Mercedes after Max Verstappen and Toto Wolff were pictured holidaying in the same location.

Few realistic alternatives remain for Max Verstappen

The apparent reconciliation with Red Bull could also be linked to the limited number of competitive alternatives available in the immediate future. Ferrari’s seats are occupied by Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, while Mercedes may no longer need to pursue Max Verstappen following Kimi Antonelli’s emergence.

McLaren could realistically consider the Dutchman only if its relationship with Oscar Piastri were to break down completely. Despite some recent tension between the Australian driver and the Woking team, such an outcome does not currently appear imminent.

Mercedes’ position could also depend on the future performance of George Russell. Questions have already been raised over George Russell’s long-term role at Mercedes, but Robert Doornbos believes the team would no longer need another four-time world champion if it decided to make a change.

Zandvoort tipped for Max Verstappen Red Bull announcement

Some observers in the Netherlands believe Zandvoort could provide the perfect setting for Max Verstappen and Red Bull to confirm their continued commitment to one another. Formula 1 will return after the summer break for the 2026 Dutch Grand Prix weekend, which is set to be the final Formula 1 event at Zandvoort under the current agreement.

Speaking on an episode of the Pit Talk podcast, Robert Doornbos expressed confidence that Max Verstappen would remain with the team where he developed and achieved all his major Formula 1 success.

“We will have some news in the next month,” Robert Doornbos said. “Max Verstappen’s future will probably be announced at Zandvoort. This is the final Grand Prix in the Netherlands. It is an important moment for Red Bull to be able to keep Max Verstappen on board and tie him to the team until 2028.

“That is what the current contract says, and it is only fair to the team to say it publicly to the media: ‘I will stay with you, so we can concentrate on 2027.’ This will be an important subject of discussion.”

Robert Doornbos sees Red Bull as the only logical option

Robert Doornbos believes staying at Red Bull is now the most sensible path because the strongest alternatives have effectively disappeared. In particular, the former Formula 1 driver does not expect Mercedes to renew its previous efforts to sign the reigning champion.

“Max Verstappen has to stay at Red Bull, partly because the alternatives have now fallen away,” Robert Doornbos added. “I do not think Mercedes will push again to sign Max Verstappen as it did in the past.

“Obviously, Mercedes already has the next superstar in its team,” he continued, referring to Kimi Antonelli. “If George Russell continued to deliver disappointing performances and that became a problem, Mercedes could sign any other second driver. At that point, it would no longer need to try to recruit a four-time world champion.”

For Red Bull, a public declaration at Zandvoort would provide valuable stability after a difficult period and allow the team to focus fully on its preparations for 2027. For Max Verstappen, it would end months of uncertainty and confirm that his immediate future remains with the operation that has guided him to four Formula 1 world championships.
