Kimi Antonelli holds a commanding lead in the 2026 Formula 1 World Championship, but Mercedes expects the Italian driver to face an engine-related grid penalty later in the season. Team principal Toto Wolff believes Monza could be the right place to serve it, although he wants to discuss the decision with Kimi Antonelli’s father, Marco Antonelli.
The Mercedes driver entered the summer break with a 50-point advantage over Lewis Hamilton and a 59-point lead over George Russell. It is an enormous margin: throughout Formula 1 history, drivers holding such an advantage at the halfway point of a season have gone on to win the championship. However, Mercedes is taking nothing for granted despite Kimi Antonelli’s position at the top of the Formula 1 driver standings.
Toto Wolff has been the first to temper expectations surrounding the title favourite. The Mercedes boss remains conscious of the team’s previous engine problems and is already considering a grid penalty that could arrive later in the campaign, potentially at the Italian Grand Prix.
Kimi Antonelli leads Lewis Hamilton by 50 points
The 2026 Formula 1 title appears to be firmly within Kimi Antonelli’s grasp. He has a substantial lead, the qualities of a champion and the full support of Mercedes. His latest podium also allowed him to extend his championship advantage at the Hungarian Grand Prix.
Nevertheless, the last five races have produced only two Mercedes victories and just one win for Kimi Antonelli. Absolute caution is therefore required, with the team determined to keep its feet firmly on the ground. That approach is particularly important to Toto Wolff, who has warned that the young Italian will soon need to take a penalty because another engine is expected to become necessary.
Why Kimi Antonelli could take his engine penalty at Monza
Teams generally choose circuits where overtaking is easier when deciding where to serve a grid penalty. McLaren recently adopted that approach with Lando Norris at Spa-Francorchamps, and Mercedes could make a similar choice for Kimi Antonelli at Monza, where the long straights provide significant overtaking opportunities.
The Italian Grand Prix will be held on 6 September, as shown on the 2026 Formula 1 calendar. Although the championship will resume at Zandvoort after the summer break, Toto Wolff is already considering the subsequent rounds.
“Regarding the engine penalty, I hope we will not have to take one, but we need to decide when it will happen, when it becomes necessary and at which circuit,” Toto Wolff explained.
Mercedes also considers Baku as an alternative
Toto Wolff also brought Marco Antonelli into the discussion over where the penalty should be served. “There could be a very special situation with Kimi Antonelli. We also need to speak to Marco, Kimi Antonelli’s father, to decide whether we want to accept an engine penalty at Monza, but Baku is another possibility. At Monza, we would certainly take some pressure off Kimi Antonelli by having him start towards the back.”
The Mercedes chief understands that the pressure on Kimi Antonelli will be enormous when Formula 1 arrives in Italy. The championship leader will be 20 by then, having reached that milestone in August, and he will carry the expectations of his home crowd. Starting no higher than 11th could reduce some of that anxiety, turning an unavoidable engine penalty into a potentially useful way of managing one of the most intense weekends of his season.
