Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff has defended George Russell following Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s 2026 Formula 1 world championship triumph, admitting that the team has not always provided the British driver with a car capable of matching his performances. While Mercedes celebrates its first Drivers’ Championship since 2020, Wolff acknowledged Russell’s disappointment and praised his determination throughout a season affected by reliability problems and unfortunate circumstances.
Andrea Kimi Antonelli secured his maiden Formula 1 world title at the Mexico City Grand Prix at just 20 years old, delivering a historic achievement for the Brackley-based team. Mercedes now heads into the Brazilian Grand Prix with another major objective: mathematically securing the 2026 Constructors’ Championship just one week after celebrating its drivers’ title.
Toto Wolff explains George Russell’s disappointment after Kimi Antonelli’s F1 title
The atmosphere at Mercedes remains celebratory following Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s emotional world championship victory in Mexico. However, the two sides of the Mercedes garage have experienced contrasting fortunes, with George Russell enduring a particularly difficult period despite demonstrating strong performance behind the wheel.
Toto Wolff acknowledged that the British driver’s disappointment was understandable, especially given the circumstances that have affected his season. The Mercedes team principal emphasised that Russell has consistently performed at an extremely high level, but reliability issues and unfortunate incidents have sometimes compromised his races and strategic opportunities.
Speaking about the contrasting experiences of his two drivers, Wolff said:
“The weekend in Mexico was special for Kimi and for the team. Winning the World Championship is an incredible achievement, especially at this stage of his career, and he fully deserves this moment.
“For George, the disappointment is natural. He has been very hard on himself, but this season he has driven at an extremely high level, once again demonstrating the qualities we know he possesses.
“There have been circumstances beyond his control that have not always worked in his favour and, on the other hand, we have not always provided him with a car that was up to the task. Nevertheless, the way he has continued to push and contribute to the team says a great deal about his value.”
Wolff’s comments underline the importance Mercedes places on George Russell’s contribution, even as Andrea Kimi Antonelli enjoys the biggest achievement of his young Formula 1 career.
The Austrian’s acknowledgement of the team’s shortcomings is particularly significant given the challenges Russell has faced against his championship-winning team-mate. Mercedes has previously addressed the difficulties George Russell has experienced in his battle with Andrea Kimi Antonelli, recognising that not every setback has been within the British driver’s control.
Mercedes targets second world championship at Brazilian Grand Prix
Despite the contrasting emotions within the team, Toto Wolff has made it clear that Mercedes must now focus on completing its principal objective for the 2026 season. The Brackley-based outfit began the campaign determined to fight for both Formula 1 world championships, and with the Drivers’ Championship already secured, attention has shifted towards the constructors’ crown.
Mercedes could mathematically clinch that title at the São Paulo Grand Prix, although Wolff warned that the outcome should not be taken for granted. The team principal stressed that success in the Constructors’ Championship reflects the combined efforts of everyone involved in the organisation, both at the circuit and at its facilities in Brackley and Brixworth.
“Our focus, however, has already turned to São Paulo,” Wolff continued. “We started this season with the aim of fighting for both championships, and there is still a job to finish.
“The Constructors’ Championship is the result of the efforts of the entire organisation, both at the track and at our bases in Brackley and Brixworth; winning it would mean an enormous amount to all of us.
“However, nothing has been won yet. Interlagos is always a challenging weekend where the margin for error is minimal. We need to be on the front foot from the very first session and put ourselves in the best possible position to bring home both titles this season.”
George Russell and Kimi Antonelli remain crucial to Mercedes’ title ambitions
The Brazilian Grand Prix therefore represents another important opportunity for Mercedes to build on its successful 2026 campaign. While Andrea Kimi Antonelli arrives as the newly crowned world champion, George Russell remains an essential part of the team’s efforts to secure the Constructors’ Championship.
Wolff’s message reflects his confidence in both drivers, while recognising that their individual seasons have unfolded differently. His support for Russell comes despite the disappointment of missing out on the Drivers’ Championship, with the team principal highlighting the British driver’s determination and willingness to continue contributing even when circumstances have worked against him.
For Mercedes, the immediate priority is ensuring that both cars perform strongly at Interlagos. The circuit’s demanding characteristics and limited margin for error mean the team cannot afford to approach the weekend with complacency, particularly with another world championship still to be mathematically secured.
Having already celebrated Andrea Kimi Antonelli’s breakthrough title in Mexico, Mercedes now has the chance to complete its championship mission in Brazil. Toto Wolff is determined to ensure the team maintains its focus until both objectives have been achieved.
