The battle between Sergio Perez’s father, Antonio Pérez Garibay, and journalists worldwide has taken a new turn. The 65-year-old former Mexican politician continues to assert that his son will remain with the Red Bull F1 team through 2025, honoring the contract that binds him to the Milton Keynes squad for another year. However, most international Formula 1 media have long reported rumors suggesting that Checo—who has had a disastrous season in terms of results—will be sidelined after this year’s Abu Dhabi GP and replaced next season by young New Zealander Liam Lawson.
Targeting Journalists
Sergio Perez Sr.—who previously made unacceptable homophobic comments about former German driver Ralf Schumacher, forcing Checo himself to distance himself from them—has once again taken to social media to defend his son, targeting journalists this time. “The lying F1 journalists are already looking for me,” Antonio Pérez wrote on Threads. “The commitment is to apologize publicly, whoever the liar is: them or me. On Monday, I’ll publish the list of lying journalists and media outlets.” He doubled down in a subsequent post, reiterating, “Some are lying. On Monday, we’ll know.”
Thanks to Red Bull
Earlier, Antonio Pérez shared another peculiar post: a photo of himself surrounded by memorabilia from his son’s career, alongside several crates of Red Bull cans. “Thank you, Red Bull,” read the caption. “We’re all set for 2025. The best drink in the world.” Recent rumors have also suggested that Sergio Perez could remain under contract with Red Bull next year, but in a brand ambassador role, primarily involved in sponsor events. This arrangement would allow the Anglo-Austrian team to avoid paying Perez a substantial severance package, estimated at around $20 million.
