Sergio Perez’s father, Antonio Perez Garibay, has spoken again about his son’s dismissal from Racing Point, now known as Aston Martin F1 Team. Perez claimed that what happened in 2020 was a true betrayal towards the Mexican driver, especially after Perez had financially supported the team during a time of difficulty.
After his time with Racing Point, which saw Sergio Perez secure his first F1 victory in 2020, the Mexican moved to Red Bull in 2021.
During his time with Red Bull, the Mexican driver achieved consistent results, proving himself to be a valuable teammate to Max Verstappen. However, the situation began to change in the second half of the 2024 season, as Perez struggled to secure good results.
In December 2024, despite having a contract valid until 2026, the Austrian team decided to part ways with Sergio Perez after four seasons, leaving the Mexican without a seat for the following season.
Antonio Perez Garibay’s Words
Reflecting on Sergio Perez’s recent F1 experiences, his father discussed both Red Bull and Racing Point in a recent episode of the Formula de Dos podcast. Perez Garibay was asked if his son had been fired from Red Bull, but the Mexican denied this.
“I think it was a mutual decision because there was a contract, and the expiration was very close for both parties,” he explained. “I don’t think it would have been appropriate to file a lawsuit. I think we should be grateful.”
The 65-year-old then added, “The Red Bull adventure ended on a positive note, and if you ask me, I think Sergio is grateful to Red Bull.”
After debuting in F1 with Sauber in 2011, Perez went on to race for McLaren and Force India/Racing Point. It was Racing Point, however, that chose Sebastian Vettel over him in 2020, during the team’s transition to the “Aston Martin F1 Team.” At that point, Red Bull stepped in to save the situation and secured a seat for the Mexican driver for the following season.
However, the treatment Sergio received from Racing Point still leaves Perez Garibay bitter. He recalled how his son had stepped in personally in 2018 to help the team during a critical financial crisis.
“I remember Checo saved the team when it was failing,” he stated. “But then they repaid him with this betrayal.”
