Sergio Perez still under scrutiny
Over the past two years, Sergio Perez has never been certain about his future with Red Bull. Even with signed contracts, the Milton Keynes team has always considered the possibility of replacing the Mexican driver due to poor performances, especially when compared to his teammate, Max Verstappen. In previous years, Sergio Perez’s mid-season performance drop didn’t have significant consequences in the standings. However, in 2024, Red Bull would have greatly benefited from a consistent second driver, especially against the impressive McLaren since Miami.
Consistency, however, is not found in Sergio Perez’s DNA. After a string of poor and inexplicable races, he was at risk of losing his seat during the summer break, with Daniel Ricciardo already on standby at Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium. The Mexican barely held on, but his place for 2025 is far from secure, especially in a team like Red Bull.
Sergio Perez’s comments
Sergio Perez admitted that more than once he was close to leaving. Not because of Red Bull’s decision (which could have dropped him long ago if they wanted to), but due to contacts with other teams: “I had two opportunities to change teams. When I looked at them, I thought I really liked the challenge at Red Bull. It’s a huge challenge being Max’s teammate, it prepares you for everything,” Checo told *GQ*. “I want to spend the last part of my career at the top, where the pressure is total. In the end, 90% of the grid would have wanted to have my career.” – the Red Bull driver pointed out.
The Mexican, at least publicly, has always displayed confidence in his relationship with Red Bull and the rumors suggesting he would be out of the car in the summer. This time is no different: “That’s how it works in sports. If you have one or two bad races, people talk a lot about you and so on. But it’s also something that’s part of the team’s culture. It’s part of the game.” – Sergio Perez concluded ahead of the United States Grand Prix.
