The homophobic remarks by Antonio Perez in the days leading up to the Las Vegas GP did not go unnoticed. From Nevada, his son Checo decided to clarify his stance on his father’s statements.
Perez Sr.’s defensive tirade in support of his son Checo was far from ideal: choosing to resort to homophobic comments to dispel the cloud of criticism surrounding the Mexican’s garage was probably not the most reasonable or appropriate decision.
In the days preceding the Nevada weekend, Antonio Perez Garibay—Checo’s father—pointed the finger at the criticism directed at his son by Ralf Schumacher. However, the 65-year-old from Guadalajara’s approach was less than intelligent: “[Ralf Schumacher] first claimed that Sergio was already out of Red Bull, then, the following week, he came out. Maybe he was in love with Checo!” he told ESPN, drawing significant backlash.
From the Las Vegas paddock, Checo Perez sought to clarify his stance on his father’s homophobic comments. “I don’t agree with any of those comments. I think he made a mistake, and I do not share any of the views he expressed.”
Sergio’s position is clear. The Mexican distanced himself from Perez Sr.’s statements but reminded everyone: “However, I can’t control what my father says. I can only control what I say.” – the Red Bull Racing driver concluded ahead of the Las Vegas Grand Prix weekend in Nevada, which is set to take place at the 6.2-kilometre Las Vegas Strip Circuit.
