A steady decline since June: starting the season as favorites, the Milton Keynes team has lost its way. Despite being overtaken by McLaren and Ferrari, Red Bull still has a chance at the Constructors’ Championship, and for Helmut Marko, the credit belongs entirely to Max Verstappen.
Although Max’s unprecedented dominance in Brazil has certainly softened the blow, Red Bull’s end to the season is proving challenging. After their solo triumph in 2023 and a promising start to 2024, the Austrian team has been forced to confront internal disputes compounded by development efforts that have lagged behind their rivals.
Over the months, the work of the teams from Woking and Maranello has demoted Red Bull from the top to the third strongest force in Formula 1, raising serious concerns within the Milton Keynes garage about both championship battles. After Interlagos, Christian Horner and his team can rest easy regarding the Drivers’ Championship, now a mere formality for Max. However, the Constructors’ Championship presents a more delicate situation.
Three races to go, Helmut Marko still believes in the Constructors’ title
Third in the standings and 49 points behind the leaders, the Anglo-Austrian team still harbors championship hopes with three races remaining. “For us, the situation isn’t so bad. In the wet, Max was in a league of his own, but our car in Brazil was competitive even in the dry,” explained Helmut Marko.
“We still have three races left this season. If we approach them the right way, maybe the title is still possible,” the former driver from Graz told OE24.
Helmut Marko praises Max Verstappen: “The Constructors’ Championship would be his”
With Helmut Perez visibly struggling and the car no longer flawless, if the fight is still alive, it’s solely thanks to Max. “If we were to win the Constructors’ Championship this year as well, the credit would be primarily Max Verstappen’s. With his exceptional driving skills, he managed to cover up those moments when the car was far from competitive,” concluded Helmut Marko, the team’s super-consultant.
