Christian Horner-Red Bull: the final separation
Last month, Formula 1 fans and insiders were shocked by the headline-making news of Chris Horner’s separation from Red Bull Racing. The British team principal, who had been at the helm of Red Bull for two decades, overseeing unparalleled success but also facing 18 turbulent months both on and off the track, was formally removed from his executive roles. At 51 years old, Horner had held multiple key positions within the organization, including CEO and team principal, making his departure a carefully orchestrated process. In the latest development, Horner is no longer listed as the director of Red Bull Racing, Red Bull Technology, and Red Bull Powertrains—a role he previously shared with Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko.
According to Companies House, the official British registry responsible for recording company information and maintaining public records, Horner’s mandate has officially ended. As of August 13, he no longer holds any operational role within the team. This development confirms the formal severing of Horner’s ties with the Austrian-backed Formula 1 powerhouse.
Stefan Salzer steps in
Taking over Horner’s responsibilities is Stefan Salzer, formerly Red Bull’s head of human resources. Born in 1976, the Austrian executive was appointed director on July 8—the very same day Horner was informed of his dismissal, just hours before the news was made public. Salzer’s appointment was officially recorded in Companies House only recently, further strengthening the Austrian and German presence within Red Bull’s executive leadership, which already includes Helmut Marko and Oliver Mintzlaff.
Salzer’s elevation signals a shift toward operational continuity under a leadership team with deep Austrian and German roots, emphasizing Red Bull’s commitment to structured management and internal development of key executives.
A clean break and future possibilities
The final severance of all remaining ties between Horner and Red Bull suggests that the two parties reached an amicable agreement regarding his exit package. With contractual obligations concluded and his gardening leave period likely nearing its end, Christian Horner is now free to explore opportunities with other teams in Formula 1. His decades of experience, strategic acumen, and knowledge of race operations make him a highly sought-after figure, leaving the paddock to speculate which team could benefit from his expertise next.
Red Bull’s decisive action not only closes a 20-year chapter of unprecedented success but also opens the door for new leadership approaches as the team prepares for the 2026 regulatory changes and beyond.
