Sebastian Vettel names George Russell as 2026 F1 title favorite with Mercedes. Sebastian Vettel identifies George Russell as the strongest contender for the 2026 F1 drivers’ championship.

Four-time world champion identifies George Russell as the top contender for next season

With the start of the new season fast approaching, the first predictions are already emerging. According to Sebastian Vettel, the main candidate for the 2026 title is George Russell behind the wheel of the Mercedes. The question of who will claim the 2026 world championship continues to ignite debate across the paddock, and among the most authoritative voices is that of the four-time world champion himself. Vettel has spoken without hesitation, pointing to Russell as the most credible contender for the drivers’ championship in the upcoming F1 season.

Vettel backs Russell for 2026

Speaking to ServusTV, Vettel explained that, based on the early signals seen so far, the combination of Russell and Mercedes represents one of the strongest championship bids. At the same time, the former world champion acknowledged that competition remains fierce, with multiple teams and drivers capable of joining the fight.

“On one hand, from what we’ve seen so far, it’s not a bad choice to point to Mercedes as the favorite, but at the same time McLaren also uses Mercedes engines and hasn’t done badly in recent years. I would choose George because I consider him very intelligent and I know how much he works on himself. I think he’s smart enough to understand what he can personally do as a driver to make a difference. There are several drivers on the grid capable of this, but in the current situation, my instinct tells me that George, together with Mercedes, has the best chance of achieving it this year.”

The key to winning the 2026 championship

The possibility of seeing Russell at the forefront in 2026 is also linked to Mercedes’ potential in this new regulatory era. According to internal analyses in the paddock, Mercedes-powered teams could have a very solid competitive base right from the start of the season. In this context, however, talent alone will not be enough. To genuinely challenge for the world title, Russell will need to demonstrate absolute consistency throughout the season, turning favorable opportunities into strong results.
