Lando Norris towards the title
After winning the Constructors’ Championship for the first time in this century, McLaren aims to break the curse in the Drivers’ Championship as well, a victory that has eluded them since 2008. Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri have the right car in hand to aim for their first world title, and after the first races (Melbourne and Shanghai), it is reasonable to expect an internal battle between the papaya teammates.
Both have shown strengths that, combined with the potential of the MCL39, make them strong contenders for the championship, but also weaknesses that could bring the rivals back into the fight: the Briton made too many mistakes in the China Sprint, the Australian went off track in Melbourne, and in general, he has not yet shown the consistency (which is understandable for a driver who is just starting his third year in F1).
Sebastian Vettel’s words
However, for Sebastian Vettel, there are no doubts, Lando Norris has all the tools to win his first World Championship: “I think he has shown he has what it takes. He has all the skills, and I believe that this year he will be stronger thanks to the experiences he gained in 2024,” was his comment to the BBC.
The four-time world champion sees McLaren drivers in the “front row” but doesn’t rule out Max Verstappen from the title race: “He is never to be excluded from the fight, and I believe Red Bull will recover. We’ll see if other teams get involved: Ferrari will be there, and maybe Mercedes will also be strong.”
