At McLaren, a fierce duel between Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri could ignite at any moment this season. Team principal Zak Brown explains how the team plans to handle the growing rivalry between the two drivers.
The 2025 Formula 1 season has been absolutely dominated by McLaren. The team’s MCL39 car has emerged as a masterpiece, outperforming the competition and establishing itself at the front of the grid. However, behind the scenes, the rivalry between Norris and Piastri is threatening to heat up and spark an intense battle without concessions. Despite this, Zak Brown remains calm and has outlined the team’s strategy to manage the situation effectively.
So far, fans have yet to witness a full-on wheel-to-wheel fight between the teammates. The first real incident came at the Canadian Grand Prix, which ended poorly when Norris rear-ended Piastri, nearly causing a devastating double retirement for McLaren. But Piastri has also been close to disaster on his side: in Austria and again at the recent Hungarian Grand Prix, he came perilously close to crashing while trying to overtake Norris.
According to McLaren leadership, the team will only allow a fully-fledged, fair fight between Norris and Piastri once the constructors’ championship is secured. Zak Brown also addressed how the team will manage the two drivers if they find themselves in close battles on track. Speaking to the BBC, Brown explained that the team’s approach is built on transparency, openness, and confronting issues head-on as soon as they arise.
Zak Brown emphasized that, up to this point, the team has not seen any serious conflicts between Norris and Piastri. He believes the two drivers will avoid serious fights because of the mutual trust and respect they share. “We are very fortunate to have two personalities like theirs,” Brown said. He added that when asked if they had any issues with their teammate, both drivers answered “no.” Although the competitive tension is growing, Brown stressed that there are no current signs of friction—at least not yet—and tensions could potentially emerge later in the season.
Brown recalled the Montreal incident as an example of how the team’s approach works in practice: Lando Norris admitted his mistake immediately, and Oscar Piastri understood the situation without hesitation. Brown concluded that everything is moving in the right direction for McLaren.
