Helmut Marko: “I still stand by my decisions”
Helmut Marko is the key figure responsible for managing drivers at Red Bull Racing. For many years, he has overseen the team’s junior program, which has discovered exceptional talents such as Sebastian Vettel and Max Verstappen. However, his methods have often been labeled as harsh, sparking debate both within the paddock and across social media.
“They are not amateurs”
During an interview with F1 Insider, Helmut Marko stated: “I actually still stand by those decisions. More than 95% of the drivers who did not remain in our program went on to compete in Formula E, the World Endurance Championship (WEC), DTM, or other series.”
“These are not amateurs, but professionals who earn a good living, often more than in a regular job. They can do what they love most—racing—and in many cases, this is partly possible thanks to our support,” he added.
Formula 1: the ultimate challenge
Helmut Marko emphasized that Formula 1 is the pinnacle of motorsport. “It doesn’t just require talent, but also special qualities, the right mindset, and physical strength.” According to Helmut Marko, a seat in Formula 1 is a privilege that drivers must earn. If a driver does not meet the team’s expectations during a trial period, then the seat simply isn’t the right fit for them.
Red Bull and its driver lineup
Currently, Red Bull’s two main seats are occupied by Max Verstappen and Yuki Tsunoda, though Tsunoda has been struggling more with the car. Meanwhile, Red Bull’s junior team, Racing Bulls, has fielded Isack Hadjar and Liam Lawson. If Yuki Tsunoda’s performance continues to falter during the second half of the season, a further driver replacement could be expected.
