The story of Max Verstappen and Red Bull, which began several years ago, could come to an end in the near future. At least, that’s what the rumors suggest since the blue car started losing ground to its rivals. But Oliver Mintzlaff, managing director of the team, is pushing back against the speculation.
Max Verstappen has a contract with Red Bull through 2028—something that, until the glorious 2023 season, would never have been questioned. But the trajectory of 2024 and the thus far difficult start to 2025 has sparked internal concerns about a potential exit clause being triggered.
Rumors suggest that if the Dutchman is not at least in second place by the summer break, he might decide to leave the team early for a new destination. The most likely would be Toto Wolff’s Mercedes, which is rumored to be well ahead in preparation for the 2026 regulations.
However, Aston Martin has also emerged as a potential destination, following reports that Lawrence Stroll is ready to spend £226 million to lure the four-time world champion.
“Max will end his career with us”
But while Verstappen himself insists he has never considered a move elsewhere, Mintzlaff said he is not worried about a possible departure in 2026. “We are all dissatisfied with the current situation,” Mintzlaff told BILD. “No one is trying to hide that.”
“However, I’m convinced he will continue down the path he has taken with Red Bull. Max will drive with us in 2026 as well,” he said. Max Verstappen’s entire F1 career has taken place with Red Bull, something that Mintzlaff believes will convince him to stay with the Austrian team until the end of his career.
“On one hand, he signed until the end of 2028 for a reason, and on the other, he recently took a clear stance,” the German added.
“Max once told me that he started his career at Red Bull and that he’d like to finish it here. As far as I know, nothing has changed. We’ve benefited greatly from Max being the best driver in the world. But the truth is, he also owes a lot to Red Bull. Of course, we’re in a tough phase right now, but I don’t think Max doubts us.”
“As long as he understands that we want to build the best car in the world, he will continue working with us,” he emphasized. “That’s the only way we can return to success, and we will. A long-term partnership also means staying together during difficult times,” he concluded.
